Topping L70

Topping L70

Universal Summary

The Topping L70 is a desktop headphone amplifier built to add nothing of its own. Bench testing returned 120.4 dB SINAD, distortion products near -145 dB and a frequency response called as flat as needed, and the listening notes line up with that: a neutral signature absent of coloration, very linear, punchy and quick, with accurate vocals and kick drum impact that decays fast without bleeding into the midrange. Power is not a constraint. Measured output is about 7 W into 32 ohms balanced on high gain and 1 W into 300 ohms, enough that one reviewer doubted there is a commercially available headphone it could not drive, and hiss stays inaudible on sensitive IEMs such as the Campfire Solaris. Volume is a resistor ladder arrangement with eight memory settings and a level remembered per headphone output, joined by a remote and 6.35mm, 4.4mm and 4-pin XLR jacks. The complaints are practical rather than sonic: the volume relays are very loud when adjusting level, the menu driven setup is called cryptic and the features are described as not intuitively operable, and there is no negative gain setting, named as the one thing keeping the amp off the top of the measurement chart. Staging is where impressions part, described on one hand as vast and immersive with sounds seeming to reach beyond the headphones, and on the other as true to life in size rather than expansive.

Strengths

  • Measured 120.4 dB SINAD with distortion products near -145 dB, near the top of published headphone amplifier bench rankings.
  • About 7 W into 32 ohms balanced on high gain and 1 W into 300 ohms on the bench, with volume headroom to spare on a HiFiMan Arya.
  • No audible hiss on very sensitive IEMs, confirmed by ear with the Campfire Solaris and backed by a rated sub-0.2 ohm balanced output impedance.
  • Neutral, very linear voicing that adds no real signature: accurate vocals, dynamic bass impact, fast decay with no bleed into the midrange.
  • Resistor ladder volume with eight memory settings, a level remembered per output, remote control, and 6.35mm, 4.4mm and 4-pin XLR jacks.
  • Comes close enough to the pricier Topping A90 that it was called the better buy of the two at the time of review.

Weaknesses

  • The volume relays are very loud when adjusting level, enough to disturb others in the room during late night listening.
  • Setup runs through a small monochrome LCD, with menus called cryptic and features described as not intuitively operable.
  • No negative gain setting, named as the one thing keeping it from topping the measurement chart outright.
  • No tone shaping of any kind: a rival such as the iFi ZEN CAN offers bass boost and 3D expansion this has no answer for.
  • The rear panel is crammed and does not carry the simplicity of the front panel.
  • Staging is not a standout: a similarly priced rival amp was heard throwing a wider and deeper stage.

Best For

  • Owners of power hungry planars who need real balanced watts from a compact desktop box
  • Listeners who want the amplifier to contribute no audible character of its own
  • Users switching between very sensitive multi-BA IEMs and full size headphones on one desk
  • Buyers cross shopping the Topping A90 who want close to its performance for less money
  • Desk stacks built around the Topping E70 DAC, which was the preferred pairing in testing
